John Deere started his career as a journeyman blacksmith and gained considerable fame for his careful workmanship and ingenuity for his highly polished hay forks and shovels.

Because there were many problems involved in attempting to operate a manufacturing business on the frontier' few banks, poor transportation, and scarcity of steel, among others. The steel had to be imported from England. It was until 1846 when the first plow steel ever rolled in the United States was made for John Deere and shipped from Pittsburgh to Moline, Illinois.

In 1868, the company was incorporated under the name of Deere & Company and the next year the John Deere´s son was elected vice president and treasurer.

After succeeding his father, Charles Deere started opening branch houses, to serve the network of retail dealers.

By the time of his death in 1907, Deere & company, was stilled focused in the production of agricultural products. But in the 1950s the company started Deere's Construction Equipment Division, that now markets more than 100 models for earthmoving, underground work, material handling, road building, and forestry.
